South Vietnam, January, 1968: Pfc. Ron Fuller of Indianapolis, Ind., his head bandaged after being hit by shrapnel and his AR-15 at the ready, watches for the enemy from atop an armored personnel carrier. Fuller’s C Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment — along with soldiers from B Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment; and A and D Squads, 1st Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment — got pinned down by the North Vietnamese for three hours in the Que Sanh Valley. After three hours of air strikes — some hitting as close as 50 meters from the men — the order to withdraw was given. Three tanks and one APC were destroyed, and five Americans were wounded during the action.
