Buster Douglas beats Mike Tyson, 1990

Buster Douglas beats Mike Tyson, 1990

Tokyo, February 11, 1990

James "Buster" Douglas stands in the spotlight after knocking out champion Mike Tyson in the 10th round of their world heavyweight title fight at the Tokyo Dome. At left, a stunned Tyson is held up by referee Octavio Meyran. Douglas's stunning victory (he was a 35-1 underdog) wasn't without controversy, though: He was knocked down in the eighth round, and seemed to be the beneficiary of a "long count" by Meyran. All three of boxing's governing bodies soon recognized Douglas as the champ, but his residence at the top of the boxing world was short-lived as he lost to Evander Holyfield in October, 1990.
