Helping Montagnard soldiers in Vietnam, 1964

Helping Montagnard soldiers in Vietnam, 1964

South Vietnam, January, 1964

Staff Sgt. Howard Stevens, center, an American Special Forces adviser to Montagnard troops, carefully removes a bazooka shell after the gunner had rammed it too far into the tube during an engagement with Viet Cong guerrillas in the Central Highlands. Such incidents amplified the need for experienced advisers accompanying patrols by Montagnards, in this case members of the Koho tribe.
